With the Next Pick in the FATE 2026 Draft: Building the Jacket
Every football fan knows the moment. The commissioner reads the name, the kid stands up, and someone hands him a jacket and a hat. He puts them on and he is a different person walking off that stage than he was walking onto it. The jacket is the proof.
That is exactly why we said yes to this one.
The event
FATE Draft Day is a live celebration in Detroit that honors graduating FATE seniors as they take their next step — into college, careers, the military, or the skilled trades. The event is built to mirror the energy of an NFL or NBA draft, recognizing each student as a draft pick into their own future: red carpet entrance, live entertainment, names called one at a time, presented by Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
FATE is a four-year, cohort-based program run by the Detroit nonprofit Give Merit, blending project-based learning, character development, career exposure, and mentorship. For most students, academic milestones get marked quietly. Draft Day makes them loud.
Our job was the part that gets worn.
The brief
Create a draft jacket and a fitted cap that would hold up under three very different kinds of pressure:
- The walk. It had to read from across a room and under stage lighting, on students of wildly different sizes, in photos that will get looked at for the next thirty years.
- The keepsake. This is not merch that lives in a drawer. It is the thing a graduate pulls out of a closet at twenty-eight and puts on their own kid.
- The calendar. Draft Day happens on one date. There is no second window.
About the jacket

The hat followed the same logic. A cap gets worn a thousand more times than a jacket does, so it has to work on its own — one clean front mark that reads at a glance, finished so it holds shape after a season of real use.

Why we take this work
New Jersey Sets was built on team apparel — jerseys, uniforms, full player packages for programs that live and die by how they look taking the floor. FATE Draft Day is the same job with the stakes moved.
A uniform tells a kid they belong to something. A draft jacket tells a kid that what they just did was worth marking. That is not a small distinction, and it is the reason a piece of apparel can matter so much more than the sum of its fabric and stitching.
We work with a lot of brands and a lot of programs. The ones we care most about are the ones where the garment is doing real work for real people. Detroit has that in abundance, Give Merit has been doing this work for years, and getting to put the physical object in a graduate's hands on the biggest night of their young life is the best version of what we do.
